The Lido Cafe, Dulwich Road

The Lido Cafe, Dulwich Road

After a 15 minute walk from Brixton station with the sun shining bright on me I arrived at The Lido Cafe on Dulwich Road. An airy, bright cafe that sits next to the Brockwell Lido Swimming Pool.

I was on a breakfast hunt (it must have been my love of eggs again) and keen to find an escape from the crowds of central London. I came across Lido listed on TimeOut as one of the best places for brunch in 2015. It's location in East Dulwich, South of London would be a new venture for me. I took a strol from Brixton Underground Station with the sun shining on my face early on a crisp December Sunday Morning. It was a bit of a trek but the award-winning Lido Cafe's neighbourhood is so delightfully tranquil and peaceful that it was worth the extra journey time.

The Brockwell Lido swimming pool was originally designed under during Art Deco movement in 1930's. It is a Grade II listed building that was re-opened in 1994 and the opening of the Cafe then followed for opening in 2009 for both swimmers at Brockwell Lido and the public.

The décor inside is artistic, with tropical rainforest touches all around. Colourful butterflies line the walls and little parrot illustrations can be found next to the windows. Colour and warmth fill the room and the fantastic pink and blue lanterns really add to the Cafe's tranquillity, especially with the view of the crystal blue swimming pool in front of you.

The menu is simplistic, really health conscious and it's clear that the company is passionate about quality and freshness of produce. The menu includes the chefs' own granola creations, our favourite breakfast combos of Smoked Salmon, Eggs or Avocado and then the timeless Full English Breakfast, with a Vegetarian option too. My friend and I started off with a Kale Smoothie (£4.00) and Berry Smoothie (£4.95) and then got straight onto the food before a much needed catchup after the Christmas Holidays.

The Vegetarian Full English Breakfast (£9.95)

Cheese and spinach sausage, roast tomatoes, mushrooms, Heinz baked beans, free range eggs (scrambled, or poached) & sourdough toast. They also note in the menu how their sausages and bacon are directly sourced from The Rare Breed Meat Company in Essex and that their eggs are from Clarence Court in Cornwall. I think every restaurant should do this personally; it's so important to know where your food comes from.

Two free range boiled eggs with sourdough toast soldiers (£4.95)

Pure egg heaven. The eggs were really fresh and tasty and the bread was incredible. It didn't bring me back to my childhood, because I'd never had Eggs and Soldiers as good as that before! The only competitor for this dish I've come across before was at Jack's Wife Frieda in New York, where instead of Sourdough Toast, they used Jewish style challah bread. This was just as good though, maybe even better!

Acai Berry & Banana Purée with home-made, gluten-free granola, bee pollen, nuts and cacao nibs. (£6.76)

This tasted like a super fresh smoothie on top of a lovely assortment of granola and nuts. I am not a massive nut fan but this dish was full of flavour and goodness.  It gave me SO much energy afterwards! I loved the personal touches of the bee pollen and cacao nibs; it also looked so beautiful. This dish comes with a small bowl of red berry fruits on the side which you can add in to the granola. It's a lot of food overall and is definitely enough as one dish.

This place is a favourite amongst Mums with babies and there is wheelchair access too. You have a beautiful view of the swimming pool whilst you eat and you have the option to sit outside when the weather gets warmer. The staff here were excellent and I'm so pleased to have started off 2016 by eating at somewhere as lovely as The Lido Cafe.

I can't recommend this place enough. They serve breakfast and brunch 7 days a week and have been awarded Best Park Cafe in the Time Out Eating and Drinking Awards and 5 of the Best Outdoor Bars by Elle Magazine. It's perfect for a quiet visit with friends or family or if you want to study or read with a coffee and pastry.
